Baton Rouge, LA — Everyone in Baton Rouge knows the name Elzie Alford Jr., the candidate running for 19th Judicial District Court Judge. But behind the courtroom experience and campaign trail is a man with a story that inspires people across the city. Here are five things you probably didn’t know about the man many are calling The People’s Judge.
1. He Protected Our Country Before Protecting Our Courtrooms
Before ever stepping behind the bench, Elzie served as an Army JAG Officer, standing for justice in the United States military. His time in uniform shaped his deep respect for fairness, discipline, and service — values he now brings home to Baton Rouge.
2. He Represents Both LSU and Southern University
Elzie is one of the rare Baton Rouge leaders who proudly carries degrees from both of the city’s flagship schools. He earned his Political Science degree at LSU on a National ROTC and Honors Scholarship, then continued on to Southern University Law Center, graduating with his Juris Doctorate on an academic scholarship.
3. He Started Out Helping Families in Need
While at Southern University, Elzie led the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, helping low-income families with their taxes. Long before the campaign spotlight, he was already serving the community with his time and skills.
4. He Knows the Hustle of a Small Business Owner
Beyond the courtroom, Elzie has owned and operated his own business. That experience gave him a front-row seat to the struggles families and entrepreneurs face every day — experience he believes makes him more grounded and relatable as a judge.
5. He Believes Justice Belongs to the People
Elzie says it best: “Every person deserves a fair hearing, every victim deserves justice, and every community deserves to feel safe.” His vision for the bench is rooted in people, not politics.
The People’s Judge
Elzie Alford Jr. is more than a candidate — he’s a veteran, attorney, and servant-leader. His story is Baton Rouge’s story: resilience, hard work, and putting people first.
